The Wind - the cleanest, renewable Energy Source

Wind power is an energy resource that is slowly gaining popularity as many are looking for ways to shift their energy sources from the traditional, non-renewable types to the eco-friendly, renewable ones. Like sunlight, wind is free, and harnessing its potential to generate energy is certainly a good way of making use of this readily available resource.
Many homes can benefits from the use of wind power to supply a fraction of their electricity needs. This is done by installing compact wind turbines, usually on the roof, and connecting the turbine to a generator which is connected to the home's electrical system.

Residential wind power is often used as a supplemental energy source, and is used along with the local electricity supplier and/or other renewable energy sources. Like in the US, also in Europe privately installed compact wind turbines can be seen more and more often.

Wind power system

When the turbine is turned by the wind, it collects kinetic energy. The kinetic energy is then converted into mechanical energy that powers a generator, supplying a certain amount of electricity to the house.
Depending on wind speeds, the wind energy generation system may or may not be operational. The electricity that is not generated by wind power is supplied by other sources available. A wind speed of around 7-10 mph is needed in order for the turbine to operate the generator.

Wind-energy technologies for large-scale energy supply

Compact wind turbines are recommended for homes with large, sturdier roof areas, as they tend to be heavy and take up a good amount of space. Smaller wind turbines are available (with rotors having a diameter of one meter or less), but they are normally installed in sets such that the cost in acquiring and installing them can be offset by the amount of power they can generate. For larger turbines, a tower ranging from 80-120 feet is usually included, which is needed to raise the rotors to heights that can properly intercept wind. Turbines are rated in terms of kilowatts, and for an average home, a turbine with a rating of 5-15 kW is recommended to supply about up to 50% of the home's electricity needs.

Residential wind power is free

There are many advantages that wind turbines have to offer. Since wind is a free resource, once the wind power system is installed, electricity costs can be brought down by 50% to 90%, depending on location and the electricity load demand in the home. Wind power systems can work effectively along with the existing electrical system, and can be retrofitted to the wiring system upon installation. The system works hand in hand with the existing electrical supply; when it is able to generate power, there is less electricity consumption from the local utility.

Wind power is a clean renewable energy source

In addition, many states provide incentives to those who invest in renewable energy systems. Aside from cost benefits, wind power is a clean, renewable energy source, thus there are no harmful emissions from the system.

Conditions are not constant for wind turbines

There are some disadvantages, though. Wind energy systems can only provide intermittent energy supply, as its operation is largely dependent on wind conditions which are not constant. The system does not make use of a battery that can be charged, so any excess power generated by the system cannot be stored. The system can also be quite expensive, but the savings on your monthly bill and the life of the system can definitely offset the price, which makes it a wise investment for homes looking that are looking to shift to "green" technology.
