Build your own Wind Wheel DIY

There might be various reasons that engage do-it-yourselfer to build an own wind wheel. First of all, the variety of windmills is enormous: Simple garden wheels that are used to decorate gardens and terraces can serve secondary purposes against voles in the backyard or around the house. Not everyone, who plans to build an own windmill, has in mind to generate electricity with alternative wind energy.

It is not that simple to build your own wind turbine and it takes quite a lot of technical knowledge and manual skills before any do-it-yourself wind power can be used. Much easier are do-it-yourself installations of professional wind turbine sets and successful results are available much sooner, too.

Build your own Mini Wind Wheel by "do it yourself"

Wind wheels for outdoor-decor are available in numerous sizes and forms. Common materials for the angled blades are plastic, aluminium, metal and wool. These little windmills can be bought as sets or be built completely by yourself, based on guidelines like: how do wind wheels work, even simple do-it-yourself projects together with children aren't difficult.

Such little garden wind wheels will be a colourful enrichment to any backyard, especially during windy days in spring and autumn. You have to evaluate the best location with optimal wind conditions before you build your own wind wheel and define the kind of construction, either with a vertical or with the more common horizontal axle. A perfect location should provide undisturbed access for winds from their main direction without any obstacles, that may weaken or deflect the wind flow or that may create turbulences.

Second, you have to determine the construction materials. The visual appearance will be different, if you decide to build an aluminium, plastic or wooden mini wind wheel. To build a simple windmill you'll need to assemble following elements:

  • mast, that is braced to 3 sides
  • wind wheel with two blades (positioning: 180°) or one two-sided propeller
  • or three aerodynamic blades (positioning: 120°)
  • axle
  • wind flag

An aluminium windmill will last longer than a natural wooden wind wheel. After you have chosen your preferred material you have to get the blades in an aerodynamic shape and always check that they are equally balanced. If you decide to colour the finished blades, spray several thin layers. Wooden wheels should at least get a final weatherproof protection and polishing. It is vital that the whole angled flat surface of the blades is absolutely smooth to avoid additional noises and disturbing turbulences, what would slow down the rotating movement. For the same reason you should clean the rotors periodically from insects and pollution. You can build aerodynamic windmill-blades completely in DIY, you can recycle old materials or you buy a pre-manufactured wind wheel set.

For the wing at the extension of the axle, the wind flag, you can choose various forms. Very popular are simple geometric designs like triangle, arrow-shape or square. Also figurative designed wind flags are common use. In this case, normally small animal-silhouettes, sun, moon or human figures like craftsmen or regional anecdotes form the visual counterpart to the rotors. If you've decided to build a wind wheels with a vertical axle, like a compass rose, the capitals for the four directions of the wind are a common choice, besides figurative motifs. But even these vertical windmills can be designed with geometric blades or popular animal silhouettes. Disadvantages of wind power and advantages of wind wheels do not matter for building decorative garden wind-toys, because for these diy wheels just "fun and movement" of colourful rotors are priority.

Mini Wind Wheel - Generate your own Power (Wind Power DIY)

To build your own wind power station and generate electricity by do-it-yourself, it takes several large-scale constructions. The first step is again to search for the optimal and most efficient location of the mini wind wheel. Perhaps you have to install your windmill-construction high above your roof or your garden to be able to provide the wheels with undisturbed winds without any turbulences. Find out, if you need any permissions for installing and operating wind turbines in your area. Several regions have quite different regulations about limiting values for mast heights and diameters of wind wheel rotors.

In case you are planning to build a wooden windmill, you should remember, that the average duration of wooden wheels is shorter than aluminium ones. Considering the immense amount of time, materials and construction-work, you will probably have to invest into a DIY wind turbine, you should go for a long-time profitable solution, what could mean that you better go for an alu windmill model. A pre-manufactured compact wind turbine generator bought as DIY-set from a specialized dealer will finally guarantee have positive results. Who is technically and manually skilled and want to build his wind power station by himself, will need following elements for his DIY mini wind turbine:

  • mast, that is braced to 3 sides
  • wind wheel: aerodynamic three blade rotor (positioning: 120°) with a generator
  • wind axle with wind flag
  • charger-transformer and power cables with a big diameter
  • battery
  • final transformer-unit

Wind wheel rotors and axles have to be very well designed so a less as possible start-up energy will be needed. When the blades are pushed by winds and turn the generator of the windmill, the generated electric current has to be transformed, before electricity can charge a battery. The transformer also has to guarantee, that charging works equally. To avoid the battery will overload any generated surplus of electric power must be used by an additional device. A final transformer-unit transforms the battery-power into 220V, so it is ready for all electronics in your household. If there is no or not enough wind, this kind of wind technology will not be able to generate electricity.

If winds are getting to strong or in case of hurricanes, the wind turbine have to be put out of the main direction of the wind. Various possibilities can work as a brake for propellers that helps to shut down the windmill. As soon as winds go over a limiting value either a special brake-mechanism at the axle turns the rotor into a vertical position or a second wind flag pops out in a clear angle to the axle, so the blades are out of the wind and not longer hit by its main strength.
