I. Introduction - Desalination Process for Water and Electricity

The purpose of this discussion is to show recovery of pure water from salt water, and to show utilization of a fuel cell to recover hydrogen and oxygen from a solar saltwater splitter1.

II. Summary

The Desalination Process is used by a desalination plant to make water and electricity from a fuel cell2. Salt water is utilized to provide hydrogen and oxygen by means of solar water splitting.

III. The Desalination Process for Water and Electricity

Desalination3 is the basis for the process described in Fig. 1. An ideal application for the process is to add electricity production from a fuel cell to a desalination plant.

  1. Hydrogen for this process may be obtained by using a Solar Water Splitter4 which operates at 800-1200°C. This temperature enables the splitter to be effective on salt water, because the water and salt are separated.
  2. An ideal application for the Desalination Process for Water and Electricity is at a desalination plant where a fuel cell is added to produce electricity as well as pure water.
  3. This process begins with saltwater and ends with electricity and pure water and thus it is a desalination process.

IV. Conclusions

The Desalination Process for Water and Electricity can utilize a fuel cell to produce pure water and electricity from a solar saltwater splitter producing hydrogen and oxygen.

Add an Solar Splitter for saltwater and a fuel cell to a desalination plant.
